SPORT TRAILER TRAINER

Ireland

Suzanne O’Rourke, Glenard Dogs

I share my home with five dogs (four dalmatians and a dalmatian-coonhound cross) so life in my household is lively to say the least! With such an active, curious breed, we keep busy with obedience, scent work, agility, and above all, trailing. Trailing is the one activity all my dogs share, and it’s the sport that I feel most challenges their minds, leaving them happily tired at the end of a training day. As a certified games-based trainer, I’m fascinated by canine behaviour and always seek outlets that match with each dog’s motivation and breed-specific needs.

I discovered trailing almost four years ago and was hooked immediately, earning an instructor certification within the first year. Even after certifying with two different organizations, I still had many questions about the best approach to training.  Seeking answers led me to Jeff’s books and GAK9. After inviting Anna Pleban of Follow Dogs (GAK9 UK) to train with us, I was thrilled to host Ireland’s first GAK9 seminar. Through workshops and seminars, both in person and online, I began to understand and appreciate the GAK9 philosophy of self-discovery, which fosters genuine and natural canine learning.  With Anna as my tutor, I began my education as a GAK9 sports trailing trainer.

Teaching trailing is deeply rewarding. Watching handlers marvel at their dogs’ abilities and fostering a supportive community of like-minded enthusiasts is endlessly inspiring. I am especially proud to be Ireland’s first GAK9 sports trailing trainer, helping dogs and their guardians discover the joy of trailing while deepening their bond.
